Guatapé es un municipio que ha tenido diferentes cambios a lo largo del tiempo paso de depender de la agricultura y la ganadería a afrontar el turismo como principal actividad económica que sorprendió a sus habitantes con la llegada del embalse, en honor a esta actividad se celebran desde el 2001 las fiestas del embalse y el turismo que buscan la unión y el encuentro de la comunidad alrededor de actividades artísticas y recreativas , comida , deportes acuáticos y camaradería son los principales ingredientes de esta fiesta .
El origen de este municipio se remonta a la tribu de indígenas que habitaba en estas tierras liderados por el cacique GUATAPÉ de donde nace el nombre de la población fundada en 1811 y finalmente elegida como municipio en 1867 .
Los zócalos de Guatapé hacen parte de las raíces y de la tradición que tiene al rededor de 100 años , la historia cuenta que los campesinos de esa época utilizaban los zócalos para protegerlos de los picotazos de las gallinas las fachadas de sus casas de bareque , poco a poco fueron decorando este elemento de protección que ahora es un ícono de la arquitectura guatapense convirtiéndose así en la mayor expresión artística que tiene este municipio además de hacer parte de la identidad de un pueblo.
Tan característicos como los zócalos están también las ventantas y balcones en madera que adornan las fachadas de este colorido y alegre municipio
Guatapé es un municipio de Colombia, localizado en la subregión Oriente del departamento de Antioquia. Limita por el norte con el municipio de Alejandría, por el este con el municipio de San Rafael, por el sur con los municipios de Granada y El Peñol y por el Oeste con El Peñol. Su cabecera dista 75 kilómetros de la ciudad de Medellín, capital del departamento de Antioquia. El municipio posee una extensión de 69 kilómetros cuadrados.
Está dividido en las veredas de La Piedra, La Sonadora, Quebrada Arriba, La Peña, Los Naranjos, El Rosario y Santa Rita. Posee comunicación por carretera con los municipios de Alejandría, San Rafael, San Carlos, Granada y El Peñol.
Origen del nombre: Fue llamado así en honor al cacique Guatape.
Las fachadas de sus casas son coloridas, adornadas con tradicionales zócalos, como la calle del Recuerdo. El Parque Principal es amplio e invita a caminar, el malecón ofrece, además de una variada oferta gastronómica, una apacible vista sobre el embalse y le da una de las mayores atracciones a este lugar: un pueblo entre montañas a orillas de un pequeño mar.
